Albersdorf is a charming climatic resort on the Kiel Canal. The thatched community centre dates back to 1695 and, apart from the church of St. Remigius, is the oldest building in the village. The art centre is located in the house and it offers a forum for many events. One outstanding feature is the Stone-Age Park, where on a large open-air site, a prehistoric cultural landscape is being recreated to represent the era around 3,000 B.C. In the Museum of Archaeology and Ecology there are attractive exhibits dating from that time. Another sight worth seeing is the Brutkamp, a barrow with the largest capping stone in all of Schleswig-Holstein. The lookout tower on the Kaiserberg affords a fantastic view over Albersdorf and its neighbouring communities and the surroundings are ideal for many tours by bicycle and on foot.

The door to the UNESCO Natural World Heritage site lies directly next to the Wadden Sea National Park and promises pure relaxation in the North Sea climate. Brunsbüttel is surrounded by the River Elbe, the North Sea and the Kiel Canal and offers everything for a maritime holiday. You can take superb walks along the Elbe dyke and let the wind blow through your hair, leaving all the everyday stresses behind you. As a port and the town with the locks, Brunsbüttel has many attractions for you to see: you can see big ships from all over the world close to. In the course of a guided tour of the locks, chance visitors too have the opportunity to get a good impression of the great number of ships passing and gain a unique insight into what goes on at water construction sites. Museums and the municipal gallery are also very well worth visiting here, with regularly-changing exhibitions. In the historic town centre around St. James' Church, the past of the original Brunsbüttel is positively tangible. The regional museum, not far from the church and to which entrance is free, also invites you to make a visit.
The resort of Burg lies directly on the Kiel Canal and invites you to get to know its beautiful nature when canoeing, cycling, walking, hiking, horse-riding, angling or on a trip in a horse-drawn carriage. Burg lies between two nature reserves, the coastal moorland and the marshland and is also known as the "Pearl of the west coast". The recreational forest, over 50 hectares (124 acres) in area, is rather an oddity in the otherwise sparsely-wooded Dithmarschen. In the exciting natural landscape on the Wulfsboom, an elevation on the west coast, the forest museum with its lookout tower. Walking an extensive network of paths leads you past springs and ponds and through ravines. In the twilight in the Paradiestal you can see numerous bats on their nightly search for food. Also worth seeing is the historic Bökelnburg Wall, a ring-wall dating back to the 8th century and around which an exciting legend of Count Rudolf is woven.

As the central location and Dithmarschen district's principal town, Heide is a popular destination for holidays and day trips. Heide's historic market place represents the centre of the town and, covering an area of 4.7 hectares (over 11-1/2 acres) it is said to be Germany's biggest market place. The lively shopping town is characterised by medium-sized companies, retailers and catering chains. The huge market place, the parades of shops and narrow alleys invite you to take a stroll and stay for a while. The Heide weekly market has been held on the market square for over 500 years every Saturday morning and a huge range of commodities is offered, from local vegetables and fresh North Sea fish to hand-made decorative items and from clothing and colourful flowers to small animals for pets.

Meldorf lies in the heart of Dithmarschen. A walk will take you along the tracks of the Middle Ages. Concerts are held in the church, the Dithmarschen Local Museum contains some background to the Farmers' Republic, construction of the dykes and industrialisation. During the summer months, the "Kulturbonsche", a series of cultural events, offers hours of entertainment from June to August, with music, dancing and events in which you can take part. It's only a few kilometres to the coast where you can observe the ebb and flow of the North Sea. Along the dyke, there many facilities for either relaxing in a beach chair, surfing, bathing, skating, walking the mudflats, birdwatching or bathing in the North Sea – enjoy an active holiday and give your body and soul a treat. If you are looking for nature, quiet and relaxation, there are many walking and cycling trails through marsh- and moorland.

St. Michaelisdonn is the bridge between marsh and moraine, as this is where these two landscape forms meet one another at the Kleve. The Kleve was the old North Sea coastal cliff and is today a protected landscape feature. "Edda", the Dutch windmill and symbol of the community, stands out on the Kleve and can be seen from afar; a number of hiking trails start here and lead through the charming nature. A particular highlight is the observation point at the top of the 33-metre-high Spiekerberg, which has breathtaking views when the atmosphere is clear. Another highlight is the marsh railway trolley with which you can cycle to Marne - with a sail hoisted if the wind is right! Fun for the whole family, or for groups. You can get a bird's eye view of Dithmarschen if you take a sightseeing flight from the airfield at Hopen. Close by there is a 27-hole golf course and there is also a camping site for mobile homes and caravans near at hand.

Charming, surrounded by agricultural nature, enclosed by the North Sea dyke – Westerdeichstrich is a relaxing blend of dreamy, rural idyll, for a carefree holiday by the Wadden Sea Natural World Heritage site. Its components: Butendörp, at the north-west entrance to Büsum, Westerdeichstrich, where the sails of the historic windmill "Margaretha" have proudly pointed skywards since 1854, and Stinteck, directly by the sea with a two-kilometre green promenade with nude bathing and doggy areas. A guided walking tour of the mudflats to the great tideways of Prielen, Ossengoot, Scholloch and Norderpiep should definitely be part of every holiday bucket list. Westerdeichstrich is included in a trail for cyclists and hikers over the flat land behind the dykes. The routes lead through the green polder or directly by the sea and are a part of the North Sea Cycle Route.
