‘Nature in Dithmarschen? It's easy to describe: mudflats, sea, sky, a few dykes, lots of endless open land – and that's it.’ At least, that's the cliché. In reality, however, we have so much more to offer up here. Between the North Sea, the Eider, the Kiel Canal and the Elbe, our diverse landscape has plenty of surprises, experiences and exciting discovery tours in store for nature lovers. Whether young or old, in Dithmarschen you can explore unspoilt nature up close and with all your senses all year round.

Nature holidays near and in the North Sea

Yes, we really do have mudflats, the North Sea and dykes in abundance – and with them the very best ‘ingredients’ for a holiday surrounded by unique nature. More than 10,000 animal and plant species thrive in our Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. 250 of these are found nowhere else in the world. Whether it's the countless bird species that breed and raise their young here, the many fish species that have their nursery in the North Sea off Dithmarschen, or the cute seals and grey seals lounging on the sandbanks: there's never a dull moment in the animal world on Dithmarschen's coast.

You can also discover life in the North Sea with us – when the sea recedes for miles at low tide and reveals the mudflats. On various expert-guided mudflat walks, you will gain an insight into the world of lugworms, mussels, snails and other creatures – muddy feet, lots of fun and plenty of new knowledge are guaranteed!

The Speicherkoog nature reserve: a refuge for animals and humans alike

The Speicherkoog also offers a special kind of nature experience. Not only people, but also animals come here to relax. Numerous birds have found their resting and nesting place in this unique nature reserve. With a bit of luck, you might even encounter a white-tailed eagle. You can also swim to your heart's content on beautiful green beaches, go for walks or simply relax in a beach chair. In spring and summer, flower lovers will also get their money's worth: this is when various native orchids bloom in many different shades and nuances, creating a beautiful play of colours between the green of the grass and the blue of the sky. Accompanied by the sound of the wind and the voices of the birds, it is sure to be a lasting memory.

But that's not all. Because even in Dithmarschen, there is life beyond the sea. Yes, really. Our green inland region is every bit as good as the coast. Take the Eider, for example. According to legend, even Odysseus sailed on it. So it can't be that bad. And indeed, today the river offers plenty of wonderful places to swim. The Bargen ferry also offers a unique way to discover our green river landscape from the water. The twilight trips at sunset are a special experience. Yes, we Dithmarschers can be romantic too!

Stone Age people, bats and lots of forest

If you want to experience nature with the whole family, Albersdorf Stone Age Park is the place for you. In the Stone Age village, you can learn how our ancestors once lived. The surrounding Stone Age forest is perfect for long walks through nature. Children love the nature playground and the Stone Age barefoot trail.

Directly to the park

The climatic health resort of Burg in the south of Dithmarschen also offers pure nature. From boat trips on the Burger Au to a carefree day of swimming in the forest swimming pool or an exciting bat tour to a visit to the forest museum with its extensive network of nature trails, educational paths and forest playground: in Burg, nature explorers of all ages will find something to suit them.

The best way to explore Dithmarschen's natural beauty is by bike, canoe or on foot during a long hike – for example, on the Meldorf nature trails ‘Kirchstieg’, “Promenade” and ‘Süderau’. If you want to combine nature and culture, you can do so on the Hebbel circular hiking trail in and around Wesselburen. The moors also offer unique flora and fauna with their water areas, reed beds, wet meadows and agricultural land. Enjoy a carriage or hiking tour through the Offenbütteler Moor, take in the unique view from the viewing platform in the Dellstedter Birkwildmoor with its beautiful circular hiking trail, or explore the Lundener Niederung with its moor, extensive network of paths and many rare bird species.

Dykes, sheep and coastal protection

The dyke belongs to Dithmarschen like the ebb and flow of the North Sea. Even today, dykes are still being built and maintained to prevent damage from storm surges on the coast and flooding along rivers. The seemingly endless dykes with their extensive meadows and wonderful views of the water are very popular. Young and old alike enjoy using the 80-kilometre dyke line for a variety of outdoor activities, whether it's strolling, relaxing or taking part in the traditional ‘Wattolümpiade’ (mudflat Olympics).

Sheep on the dykes are also part of Dithmarschen. They are natural and sustainable protectors of the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast. Sheep have what is known as a ‘golden bite’ and a ‘golden tread’. With their short bite, they ensure that the grass on the dykes and salt marshes is strongly rooted. And the sheep's firm tread ensures that this is further reinforced. Mouse holes are also trampled down. The result is a firm, stable soil structure. 

Behaviour in nature reserves and conservation areas

There are 12 designated nature reserves and 42 landscape conservation areas in Dithmarschen. According to the  Federal Nature Conservation Act, all actions that alter or damage nature and the landscape are prohibited here.

A few simple rules help to preserve the habitat for animals and plants:

  • Stay on paths and trails.
  • Do not pick anything.
  • Do not disturb animals.
  • Keep dogs on a leash, use poop bags and dispose of them in the nearest bin.
  • Do not camp or barbecue.
  • Do not leave any rubbish behind.
