With a grain of salt and not always appreciated by the inhabitants of other centres in the region, Meldorf is also known as the cultural capital of Dithmarschen.
The cathedral is one of the most striking examples of Early Gothic architecture on the western coast of Germany, the town is busy with concert performances, its municipal theatre is active with voluntary workers and performers, and cabaret shows are found in various corners of Meldorf. Meldorf’s cinema hall is indeed small in size but it can stand on an equal footing with the large multiplexes elsewhere. The art house cinema with its hits has already bagged numerous prizes for its fabulous programme.

In the sea and by the sea, in and around Meldorf – there’s plenty to discover in your holiday. On these pages, we’ve tried to put together all sights and attractions we could think of. That of course, doesn’t mean that your imagination has to be limited to our suggestions.
Nature is more than merely the absence of a city: tranquillity, birdsong, the rustling of indiscernible creatures in the dry foliage, opposing strong gales with all your strength, the feel of rain on your body, enjoying a breath of fresh air, gaining unexplored ground with large strides.
All this and a lot more we associate with the term “nature”. And we have nature in abundance at every turn. The polders Kronenloch and Wöhrdener Loch are important parts of the nature reserve Speicherkoog with its unique flora and fauna. Koniks (a semi-feral breed of Polish primitive horse) help to keep the land open and thus stimulate wildlife diversity in and around the Wöhrdener Loch.
